How to A/B Test Your Marketing Video

Did you know it’s possible to drive more conversions from your marketing video if you A/B test different variations of your video just like you A/B test different parts of your website? It’s possible – but few people do it. This guide explains how to do it for free with minimal coding expertise needed.

This #GifGuide explains the simplest way to set up and test different endings for your marketing video in order to try and increase the video’s conversion rate.

Here’s what you will need:

  • Two versions of a video you want to test with different endings – and/or…
  • Two different images viewers can click/tap on at the end of your video.
  • A video hosting service that lets you make the last frame of the video clickable. We are using Wistia in this example.
  • A web page / landing page to display the video which can run PHP code.
  • You will also need this piece of code which will randomly display Video A or Video B when the page loads:
<?php $version = rand(0, 1); if ($version == 0) { ?>
<!-- DELETE THIS LINE, REPLACE WITH EMDED CODE FOR VIDEO A -->
<?php } if ($version == 1) { ?>
<!-- DELETE THIS LINE, REPLACE WITH EMDED CODE FOR VIDEO B -->
<?php } ?>

Step 1: Upload 2 versions of your marketing video

Step 2.1: Add CTA (Call to Action) to the video

Upload a thumbnail for the viewer to click/tap on at the end of the video.

Step 2.2: Add URLs to the CTA

Add URL(s) for the viewer to be directed to when they click/tap on the last frame of your video.

Step 3.1: Add our PHP code

Paste the code we provided on your landing page
<?php $version = rand(0, 1); if ($version == 0) { ?>
<!-- DELETE THIS LINE, REPLACE WITH EMDED CODE FOR VIDEO A -->
<?php } if ($version == 1) { ?>
<!-- DELETE THIS LINE, REPLACE WITH EMDED CODE FOR VIDEO B -->
<?php } ?>

Step 3.2: Paste in the Video Embed Codes

Paste the embed codes for videos A and B in their respective places

Step 4: Which Version Converts More?

To see which video gets more people to click, view the stats for both videos.
